URBX and two UltraStore systems compete in the Automated Storage category; reader voting closes Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. ET

WIXOM, MI, October 14, 2026: Three automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) from ISD – Integrated Systems Design are 2026 Readers’ Choice finalists. The URBX Split Case & Case Handling AI-Cube ASRS, the UltraStore Mini-Load Assembly ASRS and the UltraStore Mid-Load Assembly & Sequencing ASRS compete in the Automated Storage category of the Products of the Year awards.

Modern Materials Handling, Material Handling Product News (MHPN) and Material Handling 24/7 present the awards. Industry readers choose the winners. Voting is open now and closes Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. ET. Winners will be announced online Dec. 8 and featured in the December issue of MHPN.

Distribution centers and assembly plants need more throughput from less space and fewer workers. URBX serves distribution operations handling split case and full case orders. The two UltraStore systems feed assembly lines with parts in the exact order the line needs them.

“Each of these systems started with a customer problem,” said Tony Morgott, President, ISD. “Assembly plants told us their parts were too heavy for a mini-load. Distribution centers told us tray-based cube systems added cost and complexity. We engineered answers to both, and it means a lot to see readers recognize that work.”

URBX Split Case & Case Handling AI-Cube ASRS

URBX combines cube storage, AI-driven robotics, piece picking and mixed-case palletizing in one continuous workflow. Proprietary TowerBots travel across the top of a rack-based storage grid. They drop through vertical columns to reach any tote or case directly. There is no mining and digging through stacked inventory.

One robot fleet can handle totes, native cases or both at the same time. Cases from 6 to 24 inches and up to 50 lbs. are stored without trays or secondary containers.

  • Storage density: 3 to 4 times that of conventional racking in the same footprint
  • Height: storage grids up to 125 feet
  • Throughput: up to 500 case or tote presentations per robot per hour
  • Accuracy: pick accuracy above 99.9%
  • Labor: up to 66% labor savings across picking, sequencing and outbound palletizing

UltraStore Mini-Load Assembly ASRS

The UltraStore Mini-Load stores inventory, builds kits and sequences components for assembly operations. Its totes and bins carry up to 2,500 lbs. and measure up to 60 by 96 inches. That capacity goes well beyond typical mini-load limits.

The crane travels on the floor surface instead of a rail set into the slab. That design removes a single point of failure. If a crane needs service, a replacement can be swapped in and running in minutes. ISD’s Advanced WCS connects to the MES, ERP or WMS. It releases totes in build order for JIT and JIS delivery.

  • Picking labor: reduced by up to 66%
  • Floor space: up to 75% recovered
  • Accuracy: picking accuracy of 99.9% or better

UltraStore Mid-Load Assembly & Sequencing ASRS

The UltraStore Mid-Load fills the gap between mini-load systems and unit-load pallet systems. It stores, buffers and sequences loads up to 2,500 lbs. and releases them in exact broadcast order. Its redundant design has no single point of failure, so maintenance can occur while the system keeps running.

The system mounts on the existing floor with no floor cutting or embedded rails. It reaches up to 45 feet. Documented results come from automotive seat sequencing:

  • Sequencing: 100% sequencing accuracy at 384 seat sets per hour, with 25% overspeed capacity
  • Shipping: 54 sequenced pallets loaded onto a trailer in under 1 minute
  • Space and labor: storage space reduced by up to 85% and labor by up to 50%

ISD builds both UltraStore systems in the USA from standard, off-the-shelf components. Maintenance teams can source parts locally, with no proprietary lock-in.

“On an assembly line, uptime is the number that matters most,” said Bob Jones, Senior Consultant, ISD. “A crane on an embedded rail can take an aisle down when it fails. Our UltraStore systems run on the floor with standard parts. Service is faster, and the line can keep moving.”
