Horizontal Carousels Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS)

Horizontal Carousels Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS)

Horizontal carousels are simply a series of wire bins with shelves mounted to an oval track which rotates bi-directionally to deliver the required inventory to the operator.  (Think of a dry cleaners conveyor with bins of shelves.)

Horizontal carousels are most often used in a workstation or group called a pod.  There are between two to five carousels in a pod (four is the most popular) depending on the required throughput rate.  The pod also has a batch station behind the operator with put lights that direct the order batching process.

For maximum system flow, the carousel software is integrated into the WCS, WMS or ERP system.

So why should you consider a horizontal carousel system?  When you want to automate order picking and order fulfillment and get the most bang for the buck, fastest ROI and years of reliable service, the horizontal carousel is the winner.

Key Benefits:

  • Pick rates up to 550 lines/hour/operator
  • Reduces labor by 2/3
  • Extends order cut-off times
  • Eliminates up to 66% of wasted floor space
  • Going from manual shelf picking to a horizontal carousel system will often improve throughput by 500%
  • Tremendous uptime and reliability

  • Most cost-effective goods-to-person order picking system
  • Batch picking and putting six to 12 orders simultaneously
  • Interwoven order picking and replenishment

  • Order picking and fulfillment systems
  • Order consolidation systems requiring large numbers of open orders while eliminating miles of conveyor
  • Stock rooms
  • Low ceiling / high-density storage
  • Work in process
  • Slow and medium inventory handling system
