The advantages of pick light systems include:
- Greater labor efficiency
- Minimization of errors
- Elimination of RF terminals or paper pick list
Pick-to-light processes are generally utilized in distribution operations to streamline the order picking procedure. These systems are also used in manufacturing centers to assist with quality control. Put-to-light systems share similarities with pick-to-light systems in that they are typically used to replace stock in selection storage racks or to organize multiple picked orders by delivery site before shipping.
Operator Confirming a Pick
How these systems operate...
Both put-to-light and pick-to-light systems are driven by software linked to a customer’s ERP or WMS system. This software guides and monitors the item selection and output progress of employees. When an operator completes an item put or pick, the next location is automatically indicated. Information on the displays include where, when and how many items should be deposited or picked.
Pick-to-Light Indicator / Console
Put-to-light and pick-to-light systems utilize an indicator at or near the storage location. Many indicators display the quantity of items to pick or put away. The operator notifies the system that a pick or put is complete by pressing a button on the indicator module. There are other systems with additional built-in functions such as enabling a “short pick” function within the system software in case there's a shortage of available items or to alert workers to replace the depleted stock at the pick location. In other sophisticated pick-to-light or put-to-light systems, infrared sensors or laser pointers are utilized to streamline production and prevent worker errors.
Pick / put indicators can be positioned on virtually any storage unit. They are generally deployed on the face of order picking flow racks. In addition, indicators can be mounted on:
- Both vertical and horizontal carousels and vertical shuttles
- Static storage bins
- Pallet racks or storage shelves
- Mobile picking carts
- Other locations
